I was totally panicked. I could barely breathe. I could feel the anxiety pulsing through my body as the plane landed. WHAT HAD I DONE?
Have you ever been in one of those moments that felt like it was out of a movie? Either something was so perfect or so terrible or so exciting that it felt like it couldn’t possibly be happening to you?
There are only a few moments that fit that description for me, but one of those moments was landing in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates to start a new job as a career counselor. I had never visited the Middle East. In fact, I’d never been anywhere aside from Canada, a few countries in Europe, or the Bahamas!
I loved my job in New York City that I was leaving behind. I loved my friends. I loved my life. But…I wanted something more.
As the plane landed though, I began to question why I wanted the adventure and excitement of living abroad. Was I crazy?
What should I do with my life?
This is one of the hardest questions to answer for most of us.
What’s my purpose?
Why am I here?
Is this all there is?
Let me tell you now that deciding to live abroad was one of the very best decisions I ever could have made, both personally and professionally. But deciding to make a change was also really hard. Unfortunately, I find that many women don’t take enough chances; they stick to what’s safe for fear of making big mistakes. They stick to the career they chose when they were 18 because they can’t think of what else to do.
But there are other choices. And you don’t necessarily have to quit your job, move to another country, travel the world, or risk it all to find greater contentment in your career and life. You can slowly make changes that better align with your values and your purpose.
